A youth of about 22 years old died on the spot. However, his identity has not been ascertained yet, according to Superintendent of Police (SP) Janak Bhattarai of the District Police Office, Mahottari.Following the incident, personnel of Nepal Army, Nepal Police and Armed Police Force reached the accident site for rescue. All the injured passengers were taken to Jaleshwar District Hospital for treatment.
Those who sustained critical injuries have been referred to Janakpur Zonal Hospital for further treatment, informed Dr Rajiv Jha of the district hospital. Many of those who are in critical condition have sustained injuries to the head, chest, forehead, hands and legs, SP Bhattarai added. The bus driver, Lal Kishwor Mandal, of Pipara-8, is receiving treatment under the supervision of police.
The commuter bus (7852) en route to Jaleshwar from Janakpur was over-speeding despite bumpy condition of the road, which led to the accident, according to SP Bhattarai. "There are lots of potholes in the road section. Even driving slowly makes vehicles jump up and lose balance, let alone driving in speed," he added.
The Jaleshwar-Janakpur road section sees minor accidents every day. However, this is the first accident in the road section that claimed life, according to the locals. They said the dilapidated condition of the road coupled with negligence of drivers are the main reason behind growing number of accidents.
The road section has been awaiting reconstruction for years. Yet, none of the stakeholders have diverted their attention in repairing the road section, complained locals. Hence, passengers are forced to risk their life every time they travel through the Jaleshwar-Janakpur road section.
When will it end?
