Vector control Inspector of DHO Yam Baral said the three patients are Rekha Gupta, 35, of Patna, India and currently residing in Jalpa Road; Surendra Gupta, 50, of Sunauli, India and now living in Shivalaya Chowk; and Manju Gurung of Lamjung.
According to Baral, Rekha works as a laborer, Surendra sells vegetables and Manju is a housemaid.
Baral said this is the first time elephantiasis patients have been found in Pokhara. “These cases have shown how closely we are living with the disease,” said Baral.
During the survey conducted by the Health Department in 2003, no one had tested positive for elephantiasis. Elephantiasis is transmitted through mosquito bite.
“Children are more vulnerable to the disease. Since symptoms of the disease manifest after several years of infection, predicting the disease is not easy,” said Baral.
DHO has distributed anti-elephantiasis medicines to more than 4.72 million locals above the age of 2 in the last three days. Baral informed that the infected victims have been admitted to hospital for treatment.
