BIRATNAGAR, May 17: Despite protests and demonstration by the local shopkeepers, the Biratnagar Sub Metropolis Office with the help of security forces bulldozed the shops and stalls at B Plot of Gudri bazaar on Friday morning.

The sub metropolis office had rented the government land to the shopkeepers but recently had ordered the shopkeepers to vacate the area giving 35 days ultimatum. Upon the expiry of the deadline, a total of 40 shops were demolished by dozers on Friday.

The shopkeepers had already vacated the shops sensing that demolition was unaviodable.

The shopkeepers for the past few days had been staging protests against the decision of the sub-metropolis to demolish the shops.

The sub metropolis office plans to construct a shopping mall on the plot.

The sub metropolis office said, the annual rent of Rs 82,000 that it had been receiving as rent from the plot was meager. The area of the vacated plot is 2 kattha and 2 dhur [7840.8 sq ft].
