KATHMANDU, Aug 22: Natalia Calderón, a Spanish jazz and soul singer has been in Nepal for a couple of weeks and visited the Tilganga Institute of Ophthalmology during her current stay.

During the visit, she saw the status of child patients at the hospital and she was deeply touched. Thus, this child-lover, has teamed up with Director of JJ Sultans Studio, Prasang Shrestha, to organize a fund-raiser for the underprivileged and differently-abled children in need of cataract surgery and other eye treatments.[break]

In the music front, Calderón is an aspiring singer, popular in Europe, says Shrestha. “I personally think she has an excellent voice,” he continues adding, “We have been good friends for a long time.” Calderón along with her Quartet has won the International Jazz Competition in San Martin De La Vega, Madrid in 2008. While in 2009, the group toured Guatemala, Costa Rica and Santo Domingo in collaboration with AECID (Network Spanish Cultural Centers).

A founding member of the gospel funk choir Inside Voices, Calderón has performed extensively all around Spain since 1997 as a part of the choir group.

Talking about the event, Shrestha encourages more people to help in this cause. He also shares that all the money raised from the event will go to the Tilganga Institute of Opthalmology.

“We spoke to Tilganga and have unofficially come to an agreement. We are also talking to other institutions for back up,” shares Shrestha who ensures a 100 per cent transparency in the collection and handing over of the funds. “The audience can be ensured that their money is going in good hands for a good cause,” Shrestha adds.

One can enjoy an evening of jazz, pop and funk music with the singer along with five other musicians: Marcus Dengate, Rajat Rai, Kismat Shrestha, Ashesh Rai and Iago Mejuto. The event is slated to take place on August 26 at Tamarind Restro & Bar, Jhamsikhel, 7 pm onwards.

Tickets are priced at Rs 600 and can be purchased at the door or at Moksh, Milap House, Backyard, House of Music and Kathmandu Jazz Conservatory.
