Australia into super league

KATHMANDU, Aug 14: Defending champion Australia fixed a place in the super league of the ICC U-19 Cricket World Cup 2012 from Group A after registering six-wicket win over Ireland at Endeavour Park in Townsville on Monday. It was Australia´s third successive victory as they defeated England in the first match.



Australia restricted Ireland on 129 runs in 42.5 overs after it opted to bat first winning the toss. Alex Gregory and Shane Cassell were the pick bowlers for Australia as they took three wickets each. Gurinder Sandhu grabbed two wickets. [break]



Australia successfully chased the target in 40.3 overs for the loss of four wickets. Captain Will Bosisto was unbeaten for 36 runs while Sam Hain scored 26 not out for winning team.



Along with Australia, Pakistan and New Zealand from Group B also fixed the spot for the super league. New Zealand defeated Afghanistan by eight-runs in the match played at Kev Hackney Oval, Buderim. Winning the toss New Zealand opted to bat first and scored 198 runs losing all wickets in 50 overs.



Chasing the moderate target, Afghanistan managed to score only 190 runs in 50 overs losing nine wickets. Jacob Duffy and Mathew Quinn grabbed four wickets each to give New Zealand important victory. However, Thursday´s match between New Zealand and Pakistan will confirm the winner and the runner up of group.



In the other matches of the day, two-time champion India defeated Zimbabwe by 63 runs at Tony Ireland Stadium. Winning the toss Zimbabwe invited India to bat first. India scored 261 runs losing six wickets. Despite Malcolm Lake´s 118, Zimbabwe managed to score 198 runs in 44.1 overs. Kamal Passi took six wickets to restrict Zimbabwe.



South Africa thrashed Namibia by a 222 runs margin at Peter Burge Oval in Brisbane. Winning the toss South Africa scored massive 359 runs losing nine wickets with a century knock from the openers. Quinton de Kock slammed 126 runs in 106 balls while captain Chad Bowes scored 115 runs in 115 balls as the two batsmen put on 212-run partnership for the first wicket.



South Africa restricted Namibia for 150 runs in 46 overs. South Africa all-rounder Theunis de Bruyn picked up four wickets for the winning team.
