The result of the elections came as a setback to the UML establishment faction as Govinda Krishna Adhikari, who was projected as a leader of Kathmandu district by Khanal and General Secretary Ishwar Pokharel, failed to get elected even as a representative for the district convention scheduled to kick-start on January 7.[break]
He has been defeated from ward number 7 (Chabahil area) of Kathmandu metropolis, said a UML leader.
The party establishment faction had appointed Adhikari as the coordinator of the party´s Kathmandu district committee last year, but the rival faction, backed by UML leader KP Sharma Oli, challenged the decision and ran parallel district committee.
Leaders close to the Oli faction, on the other hand, seemed euphoric with the selection of representatives.
Rameshwar Phuyal, a leader loyal to Oli, claimed that most of the representatives elected are close to Oli faction. However, Yogesh Bhattarai, believed to be close to Khanal, said the result is a mixed bag as over 80 percent of the representatives were nominated in consensus.
