KATHMANDU, May 17: Experts have stressed the need to provide structured sex education to adolescents to guide them in the right direction.
Speaking at an interaction on "Comprehensive Sexuality Education" organized by the Beyond Beijing Committee on Friday, the committee's vice-chairperson, Dr Laxmi Tamang, said students often avoid health and physical education in grades 6, 7, and 8 due to embarrassment, while teachers struggle to teach the subject in a supportive environment. She added that grades 9 and 10 include health education only as an optional subject, which prevents many students from accessing it.

Dr Tamang urged authorities to make health education mandatory up to the secondary level. She emphasized that effective sex education could raise awareness among adolescents and protect them from sexually transmitted diseases and harmful behaviors. She also called on the media to run awareness campaigns on these critical issues.
