Stating that the concept of OGD is very important when it comes to disseminating data and statistics to the public, the CBS said it is working to develop a system through which all available data can be uploaded in a simplified version in the coming days.
Speaking at a yearbook launch of Facts of Nepal 2015, Director General of the CBS Suman Raj Aryal said, “We are working on a concept of OGD by which public can fetch data according to their needs. The new system will even allow public to create their own data by compiling various available data.” He added that, although the CBS is open about access to data, it is also mindful of concerns related to privacy and professional integrity.
The National Information Commission (NIC) has also been stressing on the dire need of making available data public as it is closely related with people's right to information. The NIC, by organizing a seminar on OGD for the first time in November, 2015, called for amending Right to Information (RTI) act in such a way that opens all relevant data, except personal and security-related data, to the public.
Similarly, economist and former member of National Planning Commission (NPC) Swarnim Wagle said that people need to improve their statistical base and use data while justifying their statements and arguments in public discourse.
Facts Research and Analytics, an independent private research company, and WeRead unveiled the second edition of the yearbook 'Facts of Nepal 2015.' The book is a compilation of infographics of data collected from various 13 sectors including agriculture, economy, education, tourism, social affairs and politics. The e-book version of the yearbook can also be downloaded using WeRead's mobile application.
