KATHMANDU, Aug 15: Epidemiology and Disease Control Division (EDCD) of the Department of Health Services (DoHS) said that wells in some areas of Kuleshwar were contaminated with the bacteria that causes cholera.

The EDCD had launched an investigating into the spread of cholera after dozens of people from Kuleshwor area got sickened with the disease. In the last 10 days, over forty people, mostly from Kuleshwor area, have tested positive for cholera.

"We found the well water in the Kuleshwor area to be contaminated with the bacteria that causes cholera," Dr Baburam Marasini, director at the EDCD, said, adding that the water supplied by private tankers could be also responsible for the spread of the disease.

"We have been investigating samples of water supplied by tankers, the Kathmandu Upatyaka Khanepani Limited (KUKL) and the ones that are sold in jars," he added.

According to Dr Marasini, micro cracks caused by earthquake might be responsible for the contamination of well water.

The EDCD said that sewage water might have entered in to the wells through the micro cracks caused by earthquake. He said that the disease can spread even if one uses utensils washed by the contaminated water.

The EDCD has asked people ensure safety of the water they drink and use chlorine even in the water they use for cooking and cleaning utensils.

Sukraraj Tropical and Infectious Disease Hospital (STIDH), which has been conducting tests on the stool samples of diarrheal patients, admitted in the hospital, said that 38 people have tested positive for cholera until Thursday.

Kanti Children Hospital has also reported two cholera cases at the hospital.

Doctors at the STIDH informed that the disease has spread to various parts of capital as diarrheal patients from Kalimati, Balkhu, Thamel, Om Bahal, Lainchaur, Baneshwar and Central Prison have been found to be infected in the last few days.

Dr Sher Bahadur Pun of the STIDH informed that some of the patients admitted in the hospital were rushed there in a critical condition.

About 25 diarrheal patients have been visiting STIDH every day.
