Disappointing results on day seven

GUWAHATI, Feb 12: Nepal remained medal-less on seventh day of the 12th South Asian Games on Thursday. Besides the opening day, Nepal had claimed medals for five consecutive days.

Nepal has won a gold medal, 12 silver and 19 bronze medals in the competition so far.

Nepal was expecting medals in athletics events on day seven. However, Nepali players in the event produced disappointing results.

Medal



At the track of Indira Gandhi Stadium, Yam Sajan Sunar passed the heat round in 200 m sprint, but finished seventh in the final round clocking 22.31 seconds. He had completed the distance in 22.06 seconds in the heats. Sri Lankan sprinter Suranjaya Silva claimed gold in the event.  

In the women's 10,000 m race, Bishwarupa Budha and Pushpa Bhandari participated in the event but left after only 2 and 3 laps respectively.
India's L Surya claimed gold in the section completing the distance in 32 minutes and 39.86 seconds. Swaty Gadhave (33 minutes 57.09 seconds) of

India and S A Lama Hewage (36 minutes 11.39 seconds) of Sri Lanka finished second and third respectively.

Chhatra Bahadur Dahal finished at the bottom among the seven participants in the 1,500 m race as he completed the distance in 4 minutes and 03.88 seconds.

Ajay Saroj of India claimed gold in the event clocking 3 minutes and 53.46 seconds.

In women's section of 1,500 m race, Saraswati Bhattrai finished fifth with a timing of 4 minutes and 25.59 seconds. P U Chitra won gold in the event by finishing the distance in 4 minutes and 25.59 seconds.

In men's triple jump, Chandra Dev Joshi finished in the bottom among six participants by jumping 13.96 meters. Ranjith Maheshwari of India claimed gold as he jumped 16.45 meters.

Similarly, Chandra Kala Lamgade finished last among five players in the women's javelin throw by throwing 40.35 meters.

In women's 4X400m relay, Nepali team of Krishna Kumari Chaudhary, Sabita Chaudhary, Dilmaya Karki and Manmati Bista finshed fifth.

Marathon Today

Nepal is expecting medals in marathon on the last day of athletics events to be held on Friday. Nepal has high hopes from women marathoners.
Swarupa Khadka and Pushpa Bhandari will compete in the marathon.

Coach Sushil Narshing Rana said that Nepal is expecting medal from Swarupa as she was in training in USA. Swarupa's best timing is 2 hours, 57 minutes and 07 seconds.

Only six athletes will take part in the event, with two players each from Nepal, India and Sri Lanka.
Similarly, Bhumiraj Rai and Khim Bahadur Khatri will take part in the men's event.

Victory in Handball

Both men's and women's handball teams recorded wins in the opening day of handball. Women's team beat Sri Lanka 36-24.

Nepal scored 12 goals in the first half and 24 goals in the second half.

Similarly, the men's team defeated Afghanistan 29-26.
