General Chhetri sworn in as army chief

KATHMANDU, Sept 10: Newly-appointed Chief of Army Staff (CoAS) Rajendra Chhetri has formally assumed his duties as the commander-in-chief of Nepal Army from Thursday, after President Dr Ram Baran Yadav conferred insignia of army chief on the general amid a function at Shital Niwas.

General Chhetri was also sworn in as the 42nd army chief of Nepal by President Yadav in the presence of Prime Minister Sushil Koirala, ministers and other top-ranking government officials. The government had decided to appoint Chhetri as the Chief of Army Staff on August 13.A qualified paratrooper, Gen Chhetri is a graduate of the Nepalese Counter Insurgency and Jungle Warfare, Company Commander and Battalion Commander courses. Born in Tanahu district, he had also received Field Artillery and Air Defense Artillery training in the early years of his service from India, Pakistan and China.

CoAS Chhetri is also a graduate from the Command and General Staff College, Ft Leavenworth, Kansas, USA (1992). He subsequently undertook the Unit Commanders' Course from the School of Army Air Defense, Pakistan and is a qualified Psychological Testing Officer from the Defense Institute of Psychological Research, New Delhi, India.

According to NA's Directorate of Public Relation (DPR), he is a graduate from the United States' Army War College, Carlisle, Pennsylvania (2010) and has attended various professional seminars and workshops at international level, including the executive seminar at the Near East and South Asia Center at the National Defense University, Washington DC and the seminar on Defense Decision Making at the Naval Post Graduate School, Monterey, California, USA.

He also holds two Masters Degrees - in History from Tribhuvan University, Nepal and in Strategic Studies from the US Army War College, Carlisle, Pennsylvania.

Gen Chhetri has some 36 years of military experience, with service during both peace and conflict, in Nepal and abroad. Outgoing CoAS Gaurav Shumsher JB Rana retired from his services on Thursday.
