KATHMANDU, Dec 14: Gorkha Brewery -- one of the largest taxpayers of the country -- has paid over Rs 265 million in capital gain tax (CGT) to the government for share transfers it carried out recently.

The company, a subsidiary of Khetan Group, had sold over 2.3 million units of its stake to Carlsberg Group, about a month ago at $40 million (about Rs 3 billion). [break]

The transfer had made Carlsberg Group the majority shareholder in the largest brewery of the country.

"We have received a payment of Rs 265.3 million in capital gain tax from the company. The payment has come promptly. This is a welcome step," said Suresh Pradhan, chief of Large Taxpayers´ Office (LTO).

He, however, did not disclose further details like total worth and valuation of each share of the company.

"We can provide you the details only when the company submits its final financial details and tax assessments," Pradhan said.

Carlsberg Group has been a shareholder of Gorkha Brewery from the beginning and has gradually increased its stake over the years.

The company says the new share structure will also help Gorkha Brewery expand into other beverage categories besides beer.
