KATHMANDU, Feb 9: Nara Hari Acharya, leader of Nepali Congress has been admitted to the National Institute of Neurological and Allied Science, commonly known as Neuro Hospital, after he suffered a stroke on Tuesday morning.

Doctors attending leader Acharya described his health condition as "critical" but "stable." He is being treated at the intensive care unit (ICU) of the hospital.Acharya was rushed to Sahid Gangalal National Heart Center (SGNHC) after he lost consciousness on hearing the death of party president Sushil Koirala.

Doctors at the SGNHC referred him to Neuro Hospital, where he was taken at 7:15 in the morning.

The hospital conducted a CT-Scan on leader Acharya, which indicated that the hemorrhage was a result of hypertension. Blood clot (hematoma), which was detected in the left basal ganglia of Acharya, is extending to ventricles, according to doctors. Acharya has been living with hypertension for 25 years and was under regular medication. The hospital also conducted a CT angiography to detect any vascular anomaly.

Although Acharya had regained consciousness after a few hours of being admitted to the hospital, he had not been able to speak.

"We are closely monitoring Acharya for any change in the clot size and water logging (hydrocephalus) in the brain both clinically and with CT-scan," Dr Upendra Devkota, who is attending leader Acharya, said.

He said that Acharya's present status does not require surgical intervention. "It is riskier to intervene in present condition," said Devkota, adding that doctors will intervene promptly and appropriately when the condition demands.

According to Dr Devkota, the next seven days are critical for leader Acharya's health. The blood clot start melting after four days and size of the clot enlarges. "If the size of the clot becomes too large and poses serious risk to his health, we will intervene," he added.

Leader Acharya is being treated by a team of neurosurgeons, neurologists, neurointensivists, radiologists, critical care nurses and physiotherapists led by Dr Devkota.

Acharya, who had stayed at the Maharajgunj residence of late Koirala whole night, lost consciousness as soon as he came out of the Koirala's room.
