News anchor Praveen Giri dies

KATHMANDU, July 29: Popular radio and television news anchor Praveen Giri died of cancer at the age of 61, Sunday morning.



Giri breathed his last while undergoing treatment at Om Hospital in Chabahil at 7:30 am. He was suffering from liver cancer. [break]



Giri is known for his unique and cogent voice and impressive news presentation in both radio and television. He worked as news anchor with state-owned Radio Nepal and Nepal Television for more than two decades.



After retiring from the government media, Giri joined some private television channels. He worked briefly with Avenues Television as news editor and then moved to another private channel, Himalaya Television.



Besides working as mediaperson, he also taught economics at Nepal Commerce Campus, Minbhawan, for several years. He was reader of economics at the Tribhuvan University.



Late Giri is survived by by his wife, two sons and two daughters.



The dead body of Giri has been kept at TU Teaching Hospital, Maharajgunj. His last rites will be performed after his eldest son, who is currently outside the country, arrives in Kathmandu.
