The movement against violence against women was triggered 106 days ago in the capital by the demands for justice for Sita Rai, Bindu Thakur and Shiva Hasmi and Chhorimaiya Maharjan, among others. [break]
Rai was robbed and raped by airport officials, Bindu Thakur and Shiva Hasmi were burnt to death and Maharjan remains missing since over a year.
While there has been some progress in other cases, the authority has not been able to do much in Maharjan´s case.
Whether the campaign will resume after 15 days depends on the progress made in these cases and the recommendations of the high-level investigation monitoring committee to deal with the cases of violence against women, according to the activists.
“It would be rude on our part not to listen to him after his insistence several times to stop the movement at least for 15 days,” said activist Jagannath Lamichhane, one of the 10 campaigners who spoke with Regmi for one and half hour today.
“On the other hand, we have certainly reached to a satisfactory level regarding the investigation and action against the perpetrators in many of the cases. So now we would be in a ´wait and see´ mode for 15 days,” he added.
The committee was formed on January 1 by the government. It had submitted its first report 15 days later.
