KATHMANDU, May 31: Only one couple has received the cash prize announced for inter-caste marriage from the District Administration Office (DAO), Kathmandu.

The government in this year’s budget had announced Rs. 100,000 cash prize for each couple for inter-caste marriage to end caste-based discrimination existing elsewhere in the country. [break]

Moti Bishwokarma of Achham and his wife Usha Basnet of Kathmandu are the lone couple receiving the prize. Both of them are aged 28.

According to DAO accountant Keshav Kumar Ghimire, they received the money on May 23. “Moti and Usha are the only couple receiving the money released by the Finance Ministry under inter-caste marriage title.”

Officials said the fact that only one couple applied for the cash prize reflects poor implementation of the programme.
