Following a complaint registered by Hari Sharan Shrestha of Barhabise-8 of Sindhupalchowk district, police arrested Devendra Kumar Bartaula, 44, of Kathmandu on Tuesday. According to the police, Bartaula had allegedly duped Rs 2 million from Shrestha by arranging 'high-level' meetings in Nepal and making calls to so called influential politicians of India. Of the total deal of Rs 5 million, Bartaula and his wife Sofila Bartaula had taken Rs 2 million at different interval of time.
Shrestha, who was associated with Nepali Congress in the district, was aspiring to become a lawmaker. He had come to Bartaula's contact via a party cadre. As per the plan, Bartaula took Shrestha to New Delhi and made several contacts to various Indian citizens via mobile phone from there on January 7, 2014. After returning from India, Shrestha had provided the amount as per the deal.
Similarly, Bartaula had also cheated Bhimsen Shrestha and Kanchha Shrestha under the pretext of sending them to Canada for lucrative jobs and Hasta Bahadur Shrestha to Czech Republic. Police said that he had received Rs 1.55 million from each of the three people promising them of jobs abroad and admission of their children at the Indian embassy-operated school in Kathmandu.
The police had also received other complaints against Bartaula related to failed attempts to dupe a Thamel-based travel agency. Assuming that Bartaula might be duping other people, the police has urged the victims to complain to the police immediately.
