SAARC secretary-level meet kicks off

KATHMANDU, April 4: The Fifth secretary level meeting of the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) countries kicked-off in the capital today.



Secretary General of SAARC, Ahmed Saleem, inaugurated the meeting held on the eve of SAARC minister-level meeting regarding the poverty alleviation.[break]



The SAARC minister-level meeting is scheduled to be held on Friday.



Speaking at the inaugural programme, Saleem said all the SAARC countries should be united to combat existing poverty in South Asian countries.



He said the meeting needs to pay special attention to meet the desires of the people of South Asia for the development of this region.



Today´s meeting would assess the SAARC secretary-level meeting held in Islamabad two years ago, achievements made in the SAARC development goals, finalize the agendas for minister-level meeting to be held on Friday, prepare documents regarding poverty, and regional and sub-regional investment projects, among others.



The meeting would hold discussions on food security and nutrition, collecting fund to establish handicraft villages, among others, said SAARC Secretary General Saleem.



Secretaries of all the eight SAARC countries and their representatives are attending the meeting.
