KATHMANDU, Oct 16: A group of Nepali Congress (NC) leaders has submitted signatures to the party’s central office in Lalitpur, demanding that a special general convention be called if the party fails to hold its 15th general convention by mid-December.
The signatures were submitted to Acting President Purna Bahadur Khadka on Wednesday afternoon. Party President Sher Bahadur Deuba had announced on Tuesday that he was delegating his responsibilities to Khadka due to health reasons. The leaders behind the signature campaign are holding internal discussions on how to move forward under the changed circumstances.

According to reports, approximately 54 percent of the total central committee members have submitted their signatures in favour of a special convention. According to the party statute, the Central Committee may call a special general convention, or if 40 percent of convention representatives submit a written request stating valid reasons, the convention must be called within three months.
However, the statute also specifies that such a convention can only discuss the issue for which it is convened. The Central Committee meeting, which was postponed on Tuesday, has been rescheduled for Thursday to discuss the timeline for the 15th general convention and the current political situation.
