KATHMANDU, July 14: We all want to outshine everyone at work and land that promotion we think we deserve. With the job market getting more competitive than ever, zoning in on the job description in your contract paper won't suffice.
You need to step up and contribute in all ways you can. Remember, standing out doesn't mean self promotion. You shouldn't do extraordinary things in order to stand out at your workplace. More often than not, it's the little things you do that take you from being an average employee to a brilliant one.
Workplace: My hideout
Here, four professionals share with us their take on how one can stand out at work and what efforts they have been putting on to gain that extra edge over others.
Anil Ghimire
Marketing Technologist, Cloud Factory
What could help a job holder stand out is being proactive and taking ownership of one's mistakes. Being proactive also means taking lead. You do not need to be told to do a certain thing at all times. During such cases you should be able to take the lead yourself. For example, I work in the marketing department, and I do not necessarily have to undertake designing works. Nonetheless, if I find the designer to be busy with something else, I do not wait until s/he is done. I instead begin to design myself. But I do make sure that no lines are crossed. Also, if you end up making mistakes, don't shy away from taking accountability for it. That will confirm your integrity and you will truly stand out.
Apart from that, one should constantly update themselves with everything related to their field of work. I try to keep up with the trend of new tools and technologies, and follow blogs on marketing. This gives me fresh insights and ideas.

There isn't just one aspect to standing out in one's job. To outshine others, you should work on achieving many qualities such as sincerity, honesty, being an amazing team player, a great leader who is supportive of his/her subordinates, etc. However, what I believe to be the most significant tool to stand out is to meet targets on time. At the end of the day, you will stand out if you accomplish your duties on time and do not procrastinate. Healthy competition should also be encouraged in the workplace as it helps employees to teach and learn, and grow in the process.

If we're talking about private organizations, then they will look at your sincerity, punctuality and the output you come up with. So it's important to focus on these areas in order to excel at your job. Much can be done with the Internet that we have today. For example, as a Content Writer, I need to first understand what my job exactly demands. In order to hone my skills and be more efficient, I should search for relevant topics over the Internet and learn the necessary tips and tricks. This will help to improve my output and make me look sincere, which is really essential during such a peak of competition that we have today. Standing out in your job will also help you earn a good recommendation that will eventually help you get a better job.
Asra Bhattarai
Assistant Manager, Samsung Electronics
First of all, remember that your sole objective should not be to "stand out" because that may turn things completely around. You should instead aim to give your best to the job you have undertaken. Secondly, don't confine your duty to the ones specified in your job description. Try doing things beyond it. I, for example, try to keep myself updated regarding the trends of mobile phones in the market which my job description does not necessarily state. Therefore, apart from giving solutions and taking responsibilities, a job holder should also make an effort to be smart and updated. However, it's probably best if you do not compete with your coworkers because if you do, sometimes you may end up making a fool out of yourself. Just do your job and do it right.
