According to Kalimati Fruits and Vegetables Market Development Board that manages the Kalimati Vegetables and Fruits Wholesale Market, popular vegetables like small tomatoes, potatoes, dry onions, carrot, cabbage, local cauliflower and white reddish have become dearer over the last couple of weeks. Traders said low supply in the market is the major reason behind rise in vegetable prices.
“Large quantity of vegetable produced in districts adjoining the capital is being diverted to markets outside the capital. Markets outside the capital are offering better price to the farmers,” said Bharat Khatiwada, president of Vegetable Wholesalers´ Association at Kalimati Wholesale Market.
He further added that vegetables produced in Dhading, Makawanpur, Nuwakot and Kavre -- key supplier districts for the capital - is being diverted to other cities like Pokhara, Chitwan, Butwal and Birgunj.
Popular vegetables like small tomatoes, red potatoes and white potatoes are selling for Rs 65, Rs 25 and Rs 22 per kg, up from Rs 50, Rs 23 and Rs 19 per kg respectively recorded in the wholesale market about two weeks ago.
Similarly, dry onion, carrot and local cauliflower are selling dearer at Rs 25, Rs 70 and Rs 45 per kg from Rs 23, Rs 65 and Rs 38 per kg respectively.
In the like manner, prices of green soybean, bitter gourd and bottle gourd have increased to Rs 36, Rs 40 and Rs 25 per kg from Rs 28, Rs 20 and Rs 18 per kg recorded two weeks ago.
However, prices of some vegetables like big tomatoes, long brinjal, cowpea and French bean have come down in the market, much to the relief of general consumers. Prices of long brinjal, cowpea and French been have lowered to Rs 20, Rs 32 and Rs 48 per kg from Rs 22, Rs 45 and Rs 56 per kg respectively.
Daily arrivals of vegetables, fruits, fishes and spices combined have tumbled below the normal daily arrivals of about 600 tons.
