Downpour serves as wake up call on disaster preparedness

KATHMANDU, May 24: After the heavy rain on Thursday exposed the inefficiency of Kathmandu´s sewerage system, Office of the Prime Minister (PMO) on Friday called on the officials of various government agencies to discuss emergency response mechanisms that may be required during a disaster that could hit the capital.



Nearly two hours of rainfall had deluged all major roads of the capital. The meeting led by government´s Chief Secretary Lila Mani Poudel directed the Ministry of Home and Affairs, Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) and Kathmandu Upatyaka Khanepani Limited to work urgently to prevent the roads from being inundated by rain waters. He also directed the authorities to submit the report on what actions the individual offices took along with their strategy to minimize the problem.

The KMC Executive Officer Laxman Aryal said that the metropolis would correct its mistake and start inspecting the sewerage that could have been blocked due to the mixture of solid waste and plastic in the drainage.



Secretary of the PMO Krishna Hari Banskota stressed on maintaining the coordination between all the response mechanisms and expediting the ongoing road construction at different parts of the Valley.



Meanwhile, the water-clogged roads leading to the country´s main administrative center Singha Durbar could be cleared after several hours of police efforts on Friday. Similarly, the staffs of Teku-based Directorate of Animal Health returned home early on the day as the offices was yet to overcome the consequence of Thursday´s rainfall, said the spokesperson of Metropolitan Police Commissioner´s Office (MPCO) SSP Hemanta Bahadur Pal.

However, the authorities have not yet collected the data of actual damage. SSP Pal said that no major damage was reported.
