KATHMANDU, May 2: The government plans to utilize domestic capital, including remittances from foreign workers, to finance the construction of hydroelectric projects under the ‘People’s Hydropower’ initiative.

President Ramchandra Paudel announced this during his presentation of the government’s policies and programs for the Fiscal Year (FY) 2025/26 to parliament on Friday. The government aims to boost investment in domestic hydroelectric projects, utilizing funds from Nepali workers abroad.

In addition to hydroelectric development, President Paudel emphasized efforts to increase the use of electric devices in households, agriculture, transportation, and tourism sectors to reduce reliance on fossil fuels. The government will prioritize large-scale energy projects, including multi-purpose and reservoir-based hydroelectric plants, to ensure a stable power supply and enhance energy security.

The government also plans to expand electricity access to areas not yet covered by the national grid through alternative power sources, along with establishing policies on transmission lines and wheeling charges.
