Man arrested for creating ‘deepfake’ video claiming Modi congratulated Balen Shah

The suspect, Nanda Prasad Bhatt from Bharatpur Metropolitan City–16, was taken into custody by a team from Chitwan District Police Office on Wednesday from Bharatpur–10, with technical assistance from the Nepal Police Cyber Bureau.

KATHMANDU, March 4: Police have arrested an individual for spreading false information by creating a ‘deepfake’ video suggesting that Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi had congratulated Balen Shah, senior leader of the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP).



The suspect, Nanda Prasad Bhatt from Bharatpur Metropolitan City–16, was taken into custody by a team from Chitwan District Police Office on Wednesday from Bharatpur–10, with technical assistance from the Nepal Police Cyber Bureau.

According to Chitwan District Police Spokesperson DSP Rabindra Khanal, Bhatt is under investigation for violating the Electronic Transactions Act, 2063.
