KATHMANDU, June 17: Work has begun on laying a 1,800-mm diameter pipeline in the Sundarijal area to improve the distribution of water from the Melamchi Drinking Water Project across the Kathmandu Valley.
According to the Project Implementation Directorate (PID), this is the largest diameter water distribution pipe ever used by the directorate in Nepal.

The directorate has also moved ahead with plans to expand the drinking water distribution network in Bhaktapur, Kirtipur, Madhyapur Thimi, Kapan, Jorpati, and Pepsi Cola areas, said PID Director and Engineer Ram Kumar Shrestha.
"Tenders have already been invited for the expansion of water distribution networks in five areas. The remaining procedures will begin soon," Shrestha told RSS.
He said the directorate is working in both day and night shifts to ensure Melamchi water can be delivered more effectively to different parts of the Kathmandu Valley. Construction of reservoir tanks, pipeline expansion and other supporting infrastructure is progressing rapidly at several locations.
The directorate said the entire system will be handed over to Kathmandu Upatyaka Khanepani Limited after testing of the newly installed pipelines is completed.
Following the handover, regular distribution of Melamchi water to households across Kathmandu Valley is expected to begin, according to Shrestha.
