KATHMANDU, July 11: Kathmandu witnessed another self-immolation attempt on Saturday, just days after a 25-year-old man died following a similar incident outside the Department of Passports in Tripureshwor, raising fresh concerns over the growing cases of extreme distress and despair.
A 45-year-old man attempted to take his own life by setting himself on fire at his rented room in Buddhanagar, Kathmandu Metropolitan City-10, on Saturday morning.
Man sets wife and son ablaze
Kathmandu District Police Range spokesperson SP Pawan Bhattarai said police rescued Ashwin Raut after he sustained severe burn injuries and rushed him to Bir Hospital for treatment.
According to hospital officials, more than 55 percent of Raut’s body has been burned, and his condition remains critical. He is currently undergoing treatment.
Preliminary police investigation suggests that Raut had a dispute with his son over an unspecified matter before taking the extreme step. Police said he set himself on fire at around 6:15 am after his wife and son had left the house. He reportedly went to the kitchen, poured oil over himself, and ignited the fire.
