KATHMANDU, June 26: Mexico finished as Group A winners in the FIFA World Cup 2026 league stage after securing a convincing 3-0 victory over the Czech Republic on Thursday.
Playing at Mexico City Stadium, Mexico sealed the win through goals from Mateo Chavez in the 55th minute, Julian Quinones in the 61st minute, and Alvaro Fidalgo in stoppage time (90+4).
Mexico, Korea eye World Cup knockout berths
The Czech Republic ended the group stage at the bottom of the standings with one draw and two defeats from three matches. Mexico collected a perfect nine points, winning all three of its group matches.
South Africa reach nnockout stage
In another Group A match, South Africa defeated South Korea 1-0.
Thapelo Maseko scored the decisive goal in the 63rd minute, while South Korea failed to find an equalizer before the final whistle.
The victory secured South Africa's place in the knockout stage for the first time in the country's World Cup history.
