NCP calls for national consensus on constitutional amendment

KATHMANDU, July 9: The Nepali Communist Party (NCP) has called for constitutional amendments to be pursued through broad national consensus, saying the process should strengthen the Constitution's core democratic values.



Speaking at Thursday's meeting of the House of Representatives of Nepal, NCP MP Pramesh Kumar Hamal said any amendment should reinforce democracy, federalism, secularism, inclusiveness and fundamental rights.

Hamal said that although his party had withdrawn from the task force preparing a discussion paper on constitutional amendment, it was not opposed to the fundamental objectives of amending the Constitution.


He also cautioned against the government's continued reliance on ordinances to address urgent issues, arguing that frequent use of the ordinance route could weaken parliamentary practice and undermine the legislative process.
