KATHMANDU, Nov 2: Prime Minister Sushila Karki has directed the immediate removal of contract employees at Nepal Airlines who were recruited through influence and political connections.
Addressing the airline’s management and board at Singha Durbar on Sunday, PM Karki questioned the recruitment practices amid ongoing protests for fairness and transparency. She stressed that the institution, once a source of pride, has now fallen into mismanagement and nepotism.

PM Karki also instructed strict action against corruption, calling for the implementation of previous reports on organizational reform. The airline’s acting managing director, Janak Raj Kalakheti, presented a report highlighting over Rs 17 billion in accumulated losses.
The Prime Minister urged management to act decisively without succumbing to political or external pressures, emphasizing that reforms may require difficult and unpopular decisions. She compared the current state of the airline to a wealthy household in disrepair, questioning why the institution suffers losses despite ample government support.
Finance Minister Rameshore Khanal and Chief Secretary Ek Narayan Aryal were also present during the meeting. Acting Chairman of the Board, Bikram Rai, committed to implementing reforms in the coming days with government support.
