KATHMANDU, July 9: At least 56 people were killed, 17 went missing and 80 others injured following landslides, floods and thunderbolts triggered by incessant rainfall in the last one month. Of them, 26 died after being struck by thunderbolts.

According to a data compiled by National Emergency Operation Center (NEOC) under the home ministry, a total of 371 households were affected by landslides and floods between June 1 and July 6.[break]

Likewise, 121 houses were completely destroyed due to landslides and floods.

The NEOC, based on the reports from concerned district administration offices across the country, has estimated loss of properties worth Rs 24.6 million.

“The monsoon season is yet to be over. The loss caused by landslides and floods so far is relatively less compared to previous years,” said section Officer Maiya Kandel at the NEOC.

Established this year with financial assistance from the Australian government and technical assistance from the UNDP, the NEOC collects processes and disseminates information related to disasters in the country.

It is also entrusted to coordinate with national and international organizations to carry out works related to disaster risk reduction and relief operations in the event of natural calamities.
