Army Club wins national taekwondo

POKHARA, May 25: Departmental teams dominated the 11th National Taekwondo Championship held in Pokhara on Saturday as Tribhuvan Army Club clinched the title with 6 gold, 1 silver and 9 bronze medals.



Nepal Police Club (NPC) finished second with 5 golds, 3 silvers and 1 bronze while Armed Police Force (APF) settled for the third position with 3 gold, 3 silver and 4 bronze medals. [break]



Army"s Prem Budhathoki defeated Purna Bahadur Singh Gurung in an all-Army final of men"s above-87 kg weight category to claim gold while Ashish Chand of Far-western Region and Bijen Khatri of Mid-western Region finished joint third in the event.



In the men"s U-87 kg section, Army"s Ram Hari Mahat defeated Laxman Maharjan of APF to secure gold. Raju Shrestha of Army claimed the bronze medal.



NPC"s Anuj Pujari claimed gold in the men"s U-80 kg category defeating Om Jung Singh of Far-western Region in the final. Army"s Dan Bahadur Aire and Bhim Bahadur Khadka of APF finished joint third in the event.



In the men"s U-74 kg section, Army"s Randutta Bhatta defeated Bharat Bohara of APF to take gold while Gems Pradhan of NPC and Santosh Pariyar of APF finished joint third.

Likewise, Ashish Maharjan of APF pipped Army"s Nischal Shrestha to gold in the men"s U-68 kg category. Uddhav Thapa of Army and Barun Shah of Mid-western Region both claimed bronze.



In the men"s U-63 kg category, APF duo of Sujan Joshi and Anil Moktan clinched gold and silver respectively.



Ranjan Shrestha of NPC and Jordan Bikram Shrestha of Western Region secured the top two positions in the men"s 58 kg section while Arun Adhikari of Mid-western Region and Netra Karki of Eastern Region took the top honors in the men"s U-54 kg category respectively.



In the women"s section, Radhika Shrestha of NPC claimed gold in the above-73 kg category defeating Laxmi Shrestha of Mid-western Region in the final. Nisha Raut of Army claimed bronze.



Army"s Pratima Bhandari won gold in the women"s U-73 kg section defeating her clubmate Sharmila Pun Magar in the final while Army"s Punam Thapa and Dhanmaya Raskoti of Western Region finished joint third.



Likewise, Samjhana Tamang of APF and Rekmaya Gurung of Western Region secured the top two spots in women"s U-67 kg.



Manita Shahi of NPC defeated Pratima Rai of Central Region to clinch gold in the women"s U-62 kg section.



Gyani Chunara of Army secured gold in the women"s U-57 kg section defeating Yoshoda Khadka of Eastern Region in the final.



In the women"s U-53 kg section, NPC"s Sita Tamang defeated Tara GC of Western Region to claim gold.



Yan Kumari Chaulagain of Army beat Prashamsa Chhetri of Western Region in the final of women"s U-49 kg while Rakhi Sharma of Western Region defeated NPC"s Regina Karki in the title clash of women"s U-46 kg category.



Army"s Gyani Chunara and Arun Adhikari of Western Region were adjudged the best players in the women"s and men"s sections respectively. They were awarded Rs 25,000 each.

Similarly, Far-western Region bagged the award for the most disciplined team.



Altogether 150 players from all five development regions and the three departmental teams had participated in the tournament in 16 different weight categories.
