CHITWAN, Sept 4: The Bharatpur Metropolitan City has begun managing dead livestock swept downstream and deposited along the banks of the Narayani River by the massive flood in the Bhotekoshi River in Rasuwa.
The severe flood swept away a large number of livestock, carrying their carcasses to the Narayani riverbank. As dead animals began lying scattered along the riverbank, the metropolitan city launched a special campaign to manage them.
According to Bharatpur Metropolitan City Police Chief and Deputy Superintendent of Police Krishna Hari Dhakal, the special campaign to manage dead livestock found in the Narayani River has been underway since September 1.

A team of metropolitan police personnel, along with a JCB excavator and tractors, has been deployed daily for the operation, he said.
“Large numbers of buffaloes and cows have been found. Pigs and goats have also been found. As a foul smell began spreading in settlements along the riverbank, we saw the need to manage the carcasses and started the operation,” Dhakal said.
According to Dhakal, dead animals found near settlements between Devghat (Thimura) in Bharatpur Metropolitan City-1 and Golaghat are being transported to locations farther away from residential areas for disposal.
Dead animals found in areas without settlements are being buried at the site itself in coordination with veterinary technicians, he said.
Currently, around five to seven dead animals are being managed each day. Veterinary technicians from the metropolitan city have also been deployed alongside the metropolitan police for the operation.
Since August 26, the metropolitan police team has also been involved in searching for and managing the bodies of people who went missing in the flood.
Dhakal said the team is continuing its efforts to manage both human remains and livestock swept away by the flood.
