KATHMANDU, Jan 1: If everything goes well, doctors at Bir Hospital will get a lucrative bonanza, as the hospital administration is planning to provide them 60 percent money which comes through their service, apart from salary and allowances.

The hospital administration has made such offer to make sure that consultant doctors, who generally leave immediately after signing in, stay at the hospital during duty hours.

“I have submitted such a proposal at the meeting of the hospital management committee to motivate doctors to attend to patients in the hospital instead of running private clinics during office hours,” Dr Bulanda Thapa, director of the hospital said. But the proposal is yet to get a nod from the committee. He said all the members of the hospital management committee are positive about the proposal.

Dr Thapa admitted that senior doctors running private clinics is one of the major problems facing the hospital. “More than 50 percent of the doctors are usually absent during duty hours,” he disclosed. “It continues to be a challenge. It is like a chronic problem.” This has compelled patients at Bir Hospital to receive treatment from interns or resident doctors.

The problem not only plagues the general service. Even in the paying service the patients cannot consult with senior doctors of the hospital. A patient has to pay Rs 20 for the general Out-door Patient (OPD) service, but the hospital charges Rs 150 for the paying service.

He hopes that the doctor will work for longer hours once the proposal gets the nod from the management committee. “This will enable the hospital to provide more surgery services and more patients will be benefited,” he said.
