KATHMANDU, June 19: The government has approved the tabling of six bills in Parliament, including four bills aimed at replacing existing ordinances.
A Cabinet meeting held at Singha Durbar on Friday approved the submission of four ordinance replacement bills and two additional bills to Parliament. The meeting also granted in-principle approval for the drafting of two new bills.
According to Minister for Communications and Information Technology Dr. Bikram Timilsina, the Cabinet approved a bill to restore previous provisions of the Nepal Special Service Act, 1985, and a bill to amend and consolidate laws related to the National Service Corps.
Stack of bills stalled in National Assembly
The Cabinet also approved the submission of bills to amend the Cooperative Act, 2017, the Public Procurement Act, 2007, the Asset (Money) Laundering Prevention Act, 2008, and certain Nepal Acts related to Health Science Academies to replace the corresponding ordinances.
The Public Procurement (Second Amendment) Ordinance, Asset (Money) Laundering Prevention (Third Amendment) Ordinance, Cooperative (First Amendment) Ordinance, and the ordinance amending certain Nepal Acts related to Health Science Academies were approved by both houses of Parliament on Friday.
The government had issued eight ordinances in the third week of Baisakh (late April/early May). Four of those ordinances are yet to be presented before the House for approval.
As replacement bills must be authenticated within 60 days of the commencement of the parliamentary session, the government now has only about three weeks remaining to complete the process. The current session of Parliament began on May 11.
The Cabinet also granted in-principle approval to draft a bill to amend and consolidate existing laws related to cooperatives and a separate bill concerning the regulation and supervision of savings and credit cooperatives.
