Committee formed to assess flood damages

KATHMANDU, July 12: The government has formed a committee to take stock of the damages caused by floods in the eastern and central Tarai, assess possible damages and prepare a report within a week.



A meeting of the Central Natural Disaster Rescue Committee headed by Home Minister Madhav Prasad Ghimire on Friday formed the committee under the coordination of Joint Secretary to take stock of damages of the floods in Bara, Rautahat, Sarlahi, Jhapa, Morang, Sunsari, and Saptari district, said Joint Secretary, Laxmi Prasad Dhakal. According to Joint Secretary Dhakal, the committee in the regional level includes representatives from Home Ministry, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ministries of Irrigation, of Physical Infrastructure and Transport Management, of Federation Affairs and Local Development, of Urban Development, of Health and Population, and Nepal Police, and Nepal Red Cross Society.



The committee would inspect the damages caused to roads, bridges, culverts and other infrastructures and study possible damages. The report the committee prepares has to assess resources needed to prevent further damages.



The meeting has strongly directed the concerned district natural disaster rescue committees to implement the past decisions, update organizations helping in rescue operations, coordinate with Indian security body at the border and carry out rescue and relief operations accordingly.
