KATHMANDU, Aug 2: Iranian President Dr. Masoud Pezeshkian arrived in Islamabad on Saturday, continuing his two-day official visit to Pakistan, according to Pakistani media reports.
According to Pakistan’s Foreign Office, President Pezeshkian is scheduled to hold formal talks with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and meet President Asif Ali Zardari. The discussions will focus on enhancing trade, regional connectivity and bilateral cooperation.
Let’s live in peace and embrace diversity
Speaking to the media ahead of his visit, President Pezeshkian said the primary objective of his trip was to expand trade and economic ties between Iran and Pakistan. He also highlighted issues such as border security and regional peace as key agenda points. The Iranian leader expressed hope to boost bilateral trade to US$10 billion and voiced Tehran’s interest in actively participating in the China–Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), which he said could serve as a gateway linking Iran to Europe.
He emphasised that attempts to disrupt Pakistan–Iran Islamic unity would not succeed.
The visit follows Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s two-day trip to Iran in May, during which he met Supreme Leader Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei and President Pezeshkian. That visit aimed to express gratitude for Iran’s support during Pakistan’s recent tensions with India, and to strengthen bilateral relations with a focus on trade, regional cooperation and peace initiatives, according to Pakistani media reports.
