KATHMANDU, April 16: The government has now decided to classify the zoos.
The Ministry of Forests and Environment has initiated the legal process to classify zoos based on the area, number of wildlife, and other service facilities.
The ministry has sought opinions and suggestions on the 'Draft Standards for the Establishment and Operation of Zoos, Wildlife Rescue Centres and Wildlife Hospitals, 2082'.
The ministry has requested feedback/suggestions within 15 days on the draft prepared in accordance with the secretary-level decision of April 7.
UK to reopen zoos, safari parks, but no schools
This standard has been established to facilitate and organise the protection of wildlife, genetic resource conservation, study, research, conservation education, recreation, breeding, wildlife rescue, protection and restoration of rescued wildlife, and wildlife treatment.
According to the proposed draft, three types of zoo classifications have been made. Zoos or wildlife parks with at least 50 hectares of area and at least 100 species of wildlife are classified as 'large zoos or wildlife parks'.
Similarly, a zoo or wildlife park with at least 20 hectares of area and at least 40 species of wildlife is classified as a 'medium zoo', whereas a zoo or wildlife park with at least five hectares of area and at least 10 species of wildlife is classified as a 'small zoo'.
Similarly, it has been proposed to classify zoos into two types based on management: those managed by the government and those managed by institutions or other bodies.
Zoos or wildlife parks established and operated by federal, provincial, and local bodies will be classified as institutions or other body-managed zoos if they are established and operated by institutions or bodies regulated and established by the government according to the law.
In the draft of the standard, 'zoo' refers to a place where animals are managed and displayed with the purpose of conservation education, recreation, breeding, preservation of genetic resources, study and research.
Similarly, the term zoo also refers to zoological gardens established according to international practice.
