JHAPA, Aug 26: The number of people obtaining passports in Jhapa district has surpassed those acquiring citizenship certificates, according to the District Administration Office (DAO), Jhapa. Along with the DAO, citizenship and passports are also issued from the area administration offices in Damak and Gaurigunj.
Assistant Chief District Officer Dorendra Niraula said that in the month of Shrawan (mid-July to mid-August) alone, 2,333 people received passports, compared to 1,289 who obtained citizenship certificates. Among the citizenships issued, 1,230 were based on descent, 55 were naturalization through marriage, and 4 were non-resident citizenships, he added.

The trend has been consistent over the past fiscal year 2024/25. A total of 22,777 citizenship certificates were distributed in Jhapa, while 33,224 passports were issued—10,447 more passports than citizenship certificates. Of the citizenships issued, 22,040 were descent-based, 675 were citizenship by marriage, and 62 were non-resident citizenships.
Meanwhile, demand for the National ID card remains even higher. In mid-July to Shrawan alone, 5,767 people received their National ID cards in Jhapa. By the end of Shrawan, a total of 360,772 residents had been issued National ID cards, according to Niraula.
