KATHMANDU, Oct 4: As the risk of flooding in the Kathmandu Valley increases following 24 hours of incessant rainfall, the Education Department of Kathmandu Metropolitan City has instructed all community and institutional schools in the city to remain on standby for the relocation of residents living in disaster-prone areas.
The department has confirmed that residents from at-risk settlements along riverbanks are being moved to nearby schools.

Public schools in areas such as Thali, Baneshwor, Koteshwor, and Dobhan have been identified as temporary shelters in coordination with local ward members.
According to the Disaster Management Department of the Metropolitan City, water levels in rivers like the Bagmati and Bishnumati are being closely monitored, as they are approaching dangerous levels.
Schools have been directed to ensure basic facilities—such as toilets, drinking water, and safe spaces—are available, as there may be insufficient places for people to sleep and take shelter during emergencies.
The largest metropolis in the country also reported that technical teams have been deployed and are continuously monitoring high-risk areas since last year.
