KATHMANDU, Dec 3: Minister for Education, Science and Technology Mahabir Pun has warned that federal grants will be withheld from municipalities that fail to form School Management Committees (SMCs) as required by law.
In a statement shared on social media on Wednesday, Minister Pun said several local governments were running schools “arbitrarily” without forming the mandatory management committees. He said a formal notice has been issued instructing all municipalities to immediately constitute SMCs in accordance with existing regulations.

“Some municipalities have been operating schools at their own discretion without forming School Management Committees. Notices have been issued to such municipalities to form the committees immediately as per the rules. Otherwise, federal grants allocated to their schools will be suspended,” Pun wrote.
He added that the education ministry is currently compiling the list of municipalities that have not yet formed the required committees.
