Seven people died in the 7.9 magnitude earthquake with its epicentre located around the Kanchanjangha Mountain range on the border between Taplejung district and Sikkim, India.[break]
One hundred and eleven people died due to devastation caused by the earthquake in India, Bangladesh and south Bhutan. Seventy-five people were killed in India, of them 60 alone in Sikkim.
The districts that suffered most damage due to the earthquake in north-east Nepal were Taplejung, Panchthar, Ilam and Jhapa. Some other districts in the Tarai also suffered damage. Three people had died in Taplejung and Panchthar. One girl died in Jhapa.
The earthquake tremors even shook Kathmandu. Three people died when the boundary wall of the British Embassy in Kathmandu collapsed. Dozens of people were injured.
Although the loss of lives due to the quake was not high compared to its intensity, it damaged physical infrastructures and property worth billions of rupees in Jhapa, Ilam, Panchthar and Taplejung. Hundreds of schools and scores of government offices collapsed or were partially damaged. Similarly, more than 5,000 houses were damaged in these districts.
The government distributed relief assistance to the people affected by the earthquake. It worked a succor only for the short-term.
Hundreds of the earthquake-affected families that suffered much damage are still demanding relief in these four districts.
