Meat suppliers here are reportedly selling chickens and eggs imported illegally. The government had earlier announced the district a bird flu-crisis zone after many efforts made to control the disease spread in the district became unsuccessful. The announcement has not yet been lifted. [break]
When approached, Chief of the District Livestock Service Office Bhaktapur, Khagendraraj Bhatta said import and sale of fowls, meat, eggs have been banned in the district in view of the bird flu outbreak.
Anybody found engaged in such activities deserves action. He claimed the office was actively working to control bird flu. The office has so far destroyed 2,954 kilograms of chicken meat seized from different meat shops in the district. However, he admitted to failing to reach each and every meat shop.
Poultry Farmers´ Association Vice Chairman Suman Suwal has said all this was happening because of poor performance of the bodies concerned.
The District Livestock Service Office and Bird Flu Control Technicians´ Committee have failed to intensify market monitoring to check illegal supply of chicken and eggs.
