Seven major aftershocks ranging between 5 and 7 on the Richter scale followed the earthquake, with its epicenter at Sindhupalchowk and Dolakha districts.
According to the report of National Seismological Center (NSC), the strongest tremor among others measuring 6.8 on the Richter Scale was first experienced at Sidhupalchowk-Dolakha district border area."The first tremor was felt at 12:50 PM with its epicenter along the border area between Sindhupalchowk and Dolakha districts. At short intervals, six other aftershocks measuring slightly above 5 on the Richter scale followed," said Mukunda Bhattarai, a seismologist.
In addition to those records, Bhattarai shared tremors measuring 4 on the Richter scale or lesser have been continuously active across Gorkha and Sindhupalchowk. However, Bhattarai explained that the multiple shocks should be seen as a positive sign of the seismic activities winding down in Nepal.
"People might feel uncomfortable on hearing that multiple aftershocks after a major tremor are a good sign. We know that none of the tremors were bigger than the mega-earthquake that occurred on April 25 and the intensity has ebbed gradually," said Bhattarai. "Repeated aftershocks releases pent up energy under the earth's surface," he explained.
Another geologist Taranidhi Bhattarai shared similar views. According to him, the situation was similar to the circumstances after the mega-earthquake at China India border in 1950.
"A powerful earthquake of 8.5 on Richter scale had occurred on the China India border and the aftershocks were felt for four years. The tremor ebbed gradually," said Bhattarai.
"In these troubled times, the best thing would be to remain with ones' family member. Earth quake is a natural process and it will recede over time," he added.
