SPORTS BRIEFS: NASA, Whitehouse enter semis

KATHMANDU, July 7: NASA and Whitehouse advanced into the semifinals of the Valley-wide Men´s Open Basketball Tournament.



NASA defeated Pentagon 64-54 on Wednesday at the National Sports Council Covered Hall to secure berth in the last four. Binod Maharjan scored 23 points for the winning side. Paras Khadka, who is also the skipper of the national cricket squad, scored 16 points for Pentagon. [break]



Whitehouse thrashed Unique Club 56-19 in another quarterfinal match of the tournament, organized by Madan Bhandari Sports Academy. Sandesh Pradhan scored 21 points for Whitehouse.





Rajbhandari close to second title



KATHMANDU, July 7: Nepal Airlines Corporation (NAC)´s Pradeep Rajbhandari is close to his second table tennis title in the tournament held to mark the 52nd anniversary of NAC.



Rajbhandari, who had won the men´s doubles title with Southern China Airlines´ Jen Chi Haas on Wednesday, entered the final of men´s singles defeating Suresh Bikram Hamal 9-11, 11-9, 11-4, 8-11, 11-9 in a competitive match.



In another all-hosts semifinal match, Nabin Bahadur Shakya ousted Susheel Chandra Gautam 11-4, 11-5, 11-3 to set up a final clash with Rajbhandari.



Earlier, in the men´s doubles, the pair of Rajbhandari and Chi edged out Suresh Bikram Hamal of the hosts who had teamed with Kingfisher´s Dinesh Dhungana to claim the title.
