KATHMANDU, March 10: Seasonal weather shifts are driving up air pollution levels across the country, with major cities like Kathmandu and Pokhara, as well as much of the Terai, experiencing concerning PM2.5 levels.

The Department of Environment (DoE), under the Ministry of Forests and Environment, has urged citizens to take precautionary measures, including wearing masks outdoors, keeping vehicles well-maintained, and avoiding the burning or dumping of waste and crop residues.

DoE Director General Gyanraj Subedi also called on the public to prevent forest fires, extinguish any accidental flames immediately, control dust and smoke at construction sites, and ensure that industries strictly follow government pollution standards.

He stressed that tackling air pollution requires collective action, with both authorities and citizens working together. The DoE noted that pollution peaks during mornings and evenings, as cold weather traps emissions, and the prolonged dry spell has further worsened air quality this season.
