KATHMANDU, July 18: Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) lawmaker Yagyamani Neupane has said Nepal cannot establish good governance or effectively combat corruption without fundamental reforms to the judiciary.
In a Facebook post on Saturday, Neupane argued that the current judicial system has failed to provide ordinary citizens with confidence that they can obtain justice.
Where there is government, there is corruption!
Citing a series of recent developments, he said the time had come for a "ruthless review" of the judiciary, warning that any further delay could have far-reaching consequences. "The longer we postpone this review, the more we may come to regret the delay," he wrote.
Neupane's remarks came a day after the Special Court ordered the release of former Finance Minister and CPN-UML Vice Chairman Bishnu Prasad Poudel on a general date pending trial in a money laundering case.
On Thursday, the Department of Money Laundering Investigation filed a charge sheet against Poudel at the Special Court, accusing him of money laundering and seeking the recovery of Rs 209 million. Following a detention hearing on Friday, a bench of judges Narayan Prasad Poudel, Dilli Ratna Shrestha and Bidur Koirala ordered his release on a general date while the trial proceeds. "All state institutions must embrace change. Only then can the country be transformed," Neupane wrote.
He stressed that his remarks were not driven by emotion but reflected the conclusion of a serious assessment of the country's governance and judicial system.
