KATHMANDU, Oct 14: The Nepal Students’ Union (NSU), the student wing of the Nepali Congress, has demanded that the government immediately launch an investigation against former Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli, former Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak, and Kathmandu Metropolitan City Mayor Balendra Shah.

Speaking at a press conference held in Kathmandu on Monday, NSU President Dujang Sherpa said that both Oli and Lekhak should be held accountable for the human casualties caused during last month’s protests.

“The government should investigate and take action against Oli and Lekhak if found guilty, as they too bear responsibility for the human losses during the Gen Z movement,” Sherpa said.

He further claimed that Mayor Balendra Shah should also be scrutinize. “He had set the mindset among the youth that Singha Durbar should be burned. He had called for the September 8 movement and publicly identified himself with its leaders. Therefore, he too must be investigated,” Sherpa added.

The union has also announced of street protests starting Tuesday demaning action against those involved in arson, vandalism, and looting during the movement.

The NSU’s statement comes amid ongoing debates over accountability for the mass unrest that erupted following the fatal police shootings of anti-corruption protesters in early September.
