Over 1,000 prisoners who escaped during Gen-Z movement still at large

KATHMANDU, March 19: More than 1,000 prisoners who escaped from the Central Jail in Sundhara, Kathmandu, during the Gen-Z protests remain at large.



Baikuntha Regmi, information officer at the Central Jail, said that 1,200 of the escaped prisoners are still unaccounted for.

“As of September 8, there were 3,880 prisoners in the Central Jail. During the Gen-Z protests, 3,517 prisoners escaped. Most have been recaptured, but 1,200 remain at large,” he stated.


Currently, the Central Jail houses 3,313 prisoners, including 1,920 convicts and 1,493 detainees. The distribution across facilities is as follows: 1,749 in the Central Jail, 1,250 in Bhadra Jail, and 314 in the Women’s Jail, according to Regmi.


The Central Jail sustained only minor damage during the protests. With all five buildings remaining secure, the administration said it has been easier to keep returning prisoners into custody.
