According to Chief District Officer (CDO) Bishnu Prashad Dhakal, curfew has been clamped in areas including Belhiya checkpoint, Basantapur Bypass Road, Airport and Anchalpur among other. He informed that curfew will be lifted on Friday morning.
The United Madheshi Front and Tharuhat Struggle Committee have been enforcing shutdown in the district for the past several days protesting against the new six-province federal model proposed by big parties.
Earlier, clash between police and protesters had ensued when a group of banda enforcers started vandalizing public vehicles, a hospital and hotels. Police fired rubber bullets and tear gas to bring the situation under control.
Around two dozen people including protesters and police were injured during the clash, police said. Two locals are said to be critically injured, according to DSP Rajendra Dhakal, chief of Rupandehi District Police Office.
Following the ugly turn of events, the irate locals attacked banda enforcers and set ablaze motorbikes and vehicles used by them. They vandalized and set ablaze 12 motorbikes, 2 tractors and 1 jeep used by banda enforcers.
