KATHMANDU, June 16: Director General of the Department of Passports, Tirtha Raj Aryal, has been placed under the control of the Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority (CIAA) in connection with an investigation into the passport procurement process.
According to high-level government sources, Aryal was summoned to the Office of the Prime Minister and Council of Ministers and later handed over to the anti-graft body for investigation. He had reached the Prime Minister’s Office carrying files related to the passport procurement process when he was taken into control by a CIAA team.

A team led by CIAA Chief Prem Kumar Rai reportedly reviewed documents related to the passport procurement and concluded that further investigation was necessary. Following this, Aryal and the Department’s IT Director Sunil Kumar K C were taken under control for further inquiry.
The CIAA is currently investigating suspected irregularities in the passport procurement process, sources said.
